Case Study #6: License Management

Problem
A customer of GlobalWare Solutions wanted assistance with the sale, fulfillment and management of electronically licensed software products, which it was offering through its reseller sales channels. For electronically licensed products, the licenses must be generated at the time of installation. Because of this restriction, a license cannot be included in the box (for physically delivered products) and if products are sold through resellers, the typical license fulfillment process does not apply because it was developed for direct sales.

Solution
GlobalWare Solutions developed a process that employs PowerCommerce(tm) to automatically generate licenses per the business rules associated with serial numbers that are unique to specific products and resellers of the Company. The process is as follows:

  • Resellers purchase "smart serial numbers" from the Company (ESD or Physical Goods)
  • Reseller sells "smart serial numbers" to end users (ESD or Physical Goods)
  • End User logs on to the Company's, the Reseller's, or co-branded portal (hosted by GWS)
  • End User enters registration and serial number for appropriate license, and license is generated and downloaded (fulfilled)
  • End User receives full PowerCommerce License Management Capabilities

Result

  • Ability to sell and automatically fulfill electronic software licenses, through the reseller sales channel
  • Significantly reduced management and customer service costs for the Company and their Resellers to sell and fulfill software licenses
  • Improved tracking and reporting of licenses sold via resellers
  • Enhanced customer satisfaction due to License Bank access/self-service features for license management
